It marked one of the most bittersweet and poignant tales in Eastern European pop culture: in 1993, a young aspiring musician from the Polish hamlet of Tychy, Silesia hit the road with his band, en route to Warsaw, and felt his life and world change forever. In seemingly no time, Rysiek Riedel rocketed to a status as one of the most iconic blues-rock musicians in Polish history, as frontman for the ensemble Dzem. With fame and success, however, came wanton living and extreme drug addiction, and within one year from that original move to Warsaw, Riedel fatally overdosed on heroin. Jan Kidawa Blonski's documentary Destined for the Blues examines the short life and now-mythical status of this tragic performer.
