Anna's absent lover Marcus, whom she calls her "elk," can always count on her for a night of passion when he comes calling, which is about once a year. Anna is a sensual and loving woman who spends the better part of the year that Marcus is away thinking about him. However, she's not so preoccupied that she's blind to the advances of her best friend's arrogant artist lover, or the advances of his married friend, a factory manager. Indeed, after her dalliances with these men apparently precipitate the suicide of her best friend, Anna feels called to go to the mountain solitudes in order to sort out her life.
