Although Dane Clark is no Humphrey Bogart -- far from it, in fact -- Deep Valley cannot deny a certain resemblance to High Sierras. That the newer drama ultimately fails due to an abundance of rather surly characters is in no way the fault of Ida Lupino, who once again proves what a natural tragedienne she was. Although her character is poorly written -- a speech impediment cured by love? -- Lupino gives her all and the result is at times quite stirring.
