The cast is the reason to watch this modest-yet-suspenseful thriller as Kiefer Sutherland and Anthony LaPaglia steal the show. Their performances are well-shaped, convincing, darkly humorous, street-level characterizations that help overcome obvious holes in the well-intended story. While the film is scaled down, the production values -- particularly the action set pieces and races -- are excellent in conveying the grittiness of the city and stables. Formerly called I Fought the Law, this 2000 thriller was made before Sutherland's TV exposure in 24 put him back in the spotlight. It will do nothing to diminish his reputation.
