In the 1990s, Lars Von Trier became the talk of film-conscious intellectuals with his series of films produced under the hyper-realistic Dogma 95 banner, and 1996's Breaking the Waves propelled his work into mainstream recognition. De Udstillede is a documentary that closely examines Psychomobile 1, a theater project Von Trier coordinated in 1996, in which 53 actors spent two months in a 19-room art museum improvising characters while Von Trier choreographed their moods and movements through a series of traffic lights, much of the action determined by the activities of an ant farm located 5,000 miles away. Director Jesper Jargil recorded the troupe's activities on videotape, and De Udstillede shows how the cast adapted to this long-term project, and how their personas began to evolve over time. This was Jargil's second film about Lars Von Trier; his earlier, The Humiliated, was a documentary of the making of the film Idioterne.
