Synopsis by Mark Deming

In the city of Managua, Nicaragua, hundreds of people live in a massive refuse landfill; called La Chureca ("the Scavenging Place") by those who live there, the dump resembles some sort of nightmare, where the rubbish of a huge city, dotted by smoldering fires, decays as the homeless pick through the refuse, hoping to find something useful. For one day, however, American musician and activist Braddigan sought to give the people of La Chureca a glimpse of a better and more dignified life. Braddigan and his band played a special concert at the landfill, and with the help of a group of artists, students and concerned citizens, they gave the homeless drawn to La Chureca a special day of music, peace and celebration. Dia De Luz (aka Day Of Light) is a documentary that offers a look at La Chureca, the people who call it home, and the special performance staged for their benefit. Day Of Light was an official selection at the 2009 Cinequest Film Festival.
