Review by Donald Guarisco

Don't be fooled by the title -- Dawn of the Mummy is just another entry in the series of gory "zombie attack" films that followed in the wake of George Romero's influential Dawn of the Dead. The Egyptian setting is lovely and the "mummy" plot hook is intriguing, but that's about all this film has to offer. The script lacks any sense of direction, the acting is uniformly abysmal and Frank Agrama's direction is completely lacking in style and pace. Even the gore is pitiful: Maurizio Trani's makeup effects are doled out sparingly and look rather rubbery and hastily crafted when they do make an appearance. The one element of the film that shows any energy or inspiration is Shuki Levy's musical score: its combination of disco beats and exotic melodies has a kitschy energy the rest of this film could have used. Thus, Dawn of the Mummy can only be recommended to the completists who feel they must see every gore flick from the 1980s.
