Synopsis by Janiss Garza

Two men are in love with Mildred (1910's superstar Clara Kimball Young), an art student in prewar Paris: English sculptor Derwent Ainsworth (Edward Langford) and eye surgeon Dr. Mario Martinez (Paul Capellani). She prefers Ainsworth, but before they can be married, his sister Sibil (Barbara Gilroy) calls him home to the bedside of his dying father. He leaves a note for Mildred before he leaves, but Martinez doctors it and makes her believe he is faithless. When war breaks out and the Germans are on their way to Paris, Martinez convinces Mildred to go with him to Spain. But Derwent, who has joined the army after thinking Mildred deserted him, returns and discovers the truth. He beats up Martinez, who never gets to the station to meet Mildred. She too finds out the truth and joins the Red Cross. Ainsworth is blinded in battle and Mildred nurses him under an assumed name (why she won't come clean is a mystery -- but then, if she did the picture would have been cut rather short). He falls in love with her, not knowing who she really is, and marries her. As a form of atonement, Martinez offers to operate on Ainsworth and restores his sight, and Ainsworth and Mildred finally get everything straightened out; Martinez meanwhile, is killed in battle.
