Ex-Army Intelligence officer Kirby (John Gregson) experiences intense paranoia after retiring from the military to become an insurance salesman, and returning home from France trailed by two undercover agents. Though compassionate bystander Laura (Prunella Ransome) aids Kirby in making a clean getaway, he begins to suspect that she, too may be in on the game after learning that her step-father Roger (Patrick Allen) is a prominent civil servant. Later, Kirby's French contact turns up dead, and an assassin catches the elusive former agent in his crosshairs. Has Kirby really gone into retirement, or perhaps just gone on to a new assignment?
