Synopsis by Jason Buchanan

Canadian collective Artificiel explores the relationship between color and sound in this performance that presents the Rubik's cube as a precisely controllable audio-visual instrument. By manipulating a Rubik's cube under a small video camera, Artificiel sets off a chain reaction of digital treatment and introspective synthesis. As the performers twist and turn their colorful cubes, the algorithmic processes prompt a series of random sounds so that the audience may observe the precise relationship between color, sound, and movement. A modern variation on the concept of the old-time color organ -- which utilized light in creating color scores and compositions -- Cubing is a fascinating sight for the eyes, and an entertaining treat for the ears.
