Synopsis by Cammila Collar

This documentary examines the odd fact that when South African leader Nelson Mandela was released from prison, nearly the first person he sought out was Cuban dictator Fidel Castro. Following the history of the Cold War from the oft-forgotten perspective of Africa, filmmaker Jihan El-Tahri illustrates how the four distinct forces of Soviet Russia, the U.S., the Colonial powers, and Africa's own underground freedom movements all pulled at the continent at once, creating a monumental tension within the continent.
