Synopsis by Rose of Sharon Winter

This video looks at cowboy art, from its beginnings in the 19th century to the resurgence of the art form in contemporary times. Art historians help the viewer understand and appreciate the genre. The images of cowboys and Indians painted by Frederic Remington and Charles Russell romanticized the vision of the American West that made an indelible impression on the American psyche, and captured the world's imagination. Their works are shown in the video, along with some pieces by contemporary artists. The mythical cowboy depicted in art is compared with the reality of cowboy life.
