Synopsis by Hal Erickson

Cosette was the fourth entry in Vitagraph's ongoing series of one-reel films based on the Victor Hugo novel Les Miserables. Once again escaping from prison, persecuted convict Jean Valjean recovers a cache of hidden gold and starts life anew. He then searches for little Cosette, the daughter of the woman who'd brought about his arrest. Harboring no ill will towards the child, he intends to raise the girl as his own daughter (which won't happen until the next chapter of this saga). For the time being, however, Valjean must once more elude his relentless pursuer, parole officer Javert. A rival series of films inspired by the Hugo novel was simultaneously produced by the Edison company.
