Synopsis by Sally Barber
Find out why the Corvette became the only world-class sportscar ever produced in America. The Corvette was originally designed to demonstrate to the world that General Motors could create a sports car able to compete with European nameplates like MG and Jaguar. To this end, the American Corvette debuted in January 1953. Produced in Flint, Michigan, the first vehicles were hand-built. Corvette: America's First Sportscar examines the history of this unique auto, beginning with a 1953 promotional film. The Stingray, Mako Shark, C-5 and hundreds of restored Corvette classics are all highlighted. The video also features rare footage of the Corvette's creators and test drivers and offers Corvette enthusiasts a bevy of interesting facts related to the car's production, performance and reputation.
