Synopsis by Hal Erickson
Veteran CBS and ABC news correspondent Connie Chung joined the cable TV brigade in this nightly 60-minute effort by CNN to topple the ratings supremacy of the Fox News Channel. Focusing on both big and small news events, Connie Chung Tonight was scheduled directly opposite Fox's biggest attraction, Bill O'Reilly, a fact that drew both praise and gentle admonition from the estimable Mr. O'Reilly. Wasting no time in courting controversy, Chung opened her series by interviewing the hapless 28-year-old Milwaukeean who landed in hot water with the police after confidentially confessing his obsession with little girls to advice columnist "Dear Abby." Debuting June 24, 2002, Connie Chung Tonight drew only a third of Bill O'Reilly's audience, despite the huge hype given the series by CNN.
