Synopsis by Hal Erickson
Choosing Victory was one of a handful of genuinely inspiring documentary efforts to emanate from the 1984 Olympics. Director Muffet Kaufman concentrates upon five physically challenged athletes. After undergoing a grueling training period, these five compete in the Olympic wheelchair race. It is clear that none of the athletes consider themselves "handicapped"-nor, for that matter, will the viewer. Commendably, Kaufman avoids the treacly "overcoming the obstacles" approach that a lesser director might have resorted to; his subjects are Olympic contenders, period.
