At the turn of the century, Tsarist Russia dominated the homeland of the Finnish people and many fled the hardship of the Russian occupation by emigrating to the U.S. This documentary tells of the great difficulties they experienced working as laborers in logging and mining camps, and shows how they got involved with the more radical elements of the labor movement, from the Wobblies (International Workers of the World) to the communists. As conditions grew better for them, and reports from Russia became grim, their commitment to radical causes diminished.
