Synopsis by Betsy Boyd
Part of avideo series which investigates glass sculptor Dale Chihuly's specific modes of working, Chihuly: Atlantis follows the artist to the Atlantis resort on Paradise Island in the Bahamas where four pieces of Chihuly sculpture enliven the beautiful landscape. On Paradise Island, Chihuly's goal is to build sculptures that are stunning but not intimidating. Viewers are invited to observe as the sculptor's creative team studies Chihuly's prototypes to construct four enormous pieces. Containing more than 2,000 hand-blown crystals, the Crystal Gate reaches 20 feet to the sky. On either side of this sculptural gate stands the Temple of the Moon and the Temple of the Sun, the first cool cobalt and subdued opalescence, the second radiant and fiery reds and oranges. Finally, an abstract cluster of glass particles evoking jellyfish and seaweed shapes, the Atlantis Chandelier, looms over the other three.
