Charlemagne is remembered as an enlightened ruler, who unified Europe during his reign in the eighth century. This program is volume one in a five-part PBS series that chronicles the life and times of the great king. This episode examines the early life of the young man who would become king. Art, reenactments, and scholarly commentary are used to illustrate how the prince's predilections for education and religion later served him well as king.
