Synopsis by Jonathan Crow
Adapted from a popular stage musical, Debaki Bose directs this tale about the legendary and enigmatic poet Chandidas, who rejected hidebound tradition in favor of a more democratic spirituality. The drama of the film centers on the growing love affair between Chandidas (Durgadas Bannerjee) and low-caste washerwoman named Rami (Umasashi). When Rami rejects the coercive advances of debauched upper-caste merchant Bijoynarayan, he convinces a priest to castigate Chandidas for consorting with the lower-caste. The poet is about to repent until he sees the abuse Bijoynarayan's henchmen inflicted on Rami. Instead, he escapes the village with her in hand.
