Synopsis by Alice Day
In certain coastal areas of California, the numbers of pinnipeds have increased dramatically. Elephant seals, fur seals, seal lions, walruses, and harbor seals are all within this grouping, and some, like the elephant seals, can grow to enormous sizes. They spend large amounts of time in the water feeding, and return to land to mate and raise their young. For a time, the populations of pinnipeds were decreasing due to aggressive hunting, but as awareness of their plight grew, efforts were made to protect their numbers. Challenge of the Seas, Vol. 7: Sentinels of the Sea depicts how they have flourished off the Golden State coast.
