Synopsis by Hal Erickson
Based on a European original, the British "reality" series Chained featured six contestants, three men and three women. Shackled together at the wrist and/or ankle, the contestants were obliged to remain in close contact for a full week, 24 hours a day. In this "most extreme dating show ever," the voyeuristic host and home audience was (hopefully) privy to blossoming romance. But there was a catch; each day, the other contestants were allowed to eliminate one of their number by voting the unlucky loser off the series, à la Survivor. Whoever remained fettered by week's end won all of the prize money. Debuting on British television in 2001, Chained was inevitably followed by an American version within the year.
