Synopsis by Sean Hurley
The Century: Events That Shaped the World is a 12-part ABC News production hosted by Peter Jennings that explores the many events and personalities that colored the 20th century. The gross injustices suffered by African-Americans, which culminated in the civil rights movement of the '50s and '60s, are chronicled here in Memphis Dreams: Searching for the Promised Land. Jennings and crew take a look at this hard-to-swallow piece of the American heritage -- the African-American experience. From slavery, through the successes of the civil rights struggle, to the tragic assassination of movement leader Reverend Martin Luther King Jr., this documentary attempts to give some structure to this long span of struggle and injustice.
