This anti-war saga finds the Nazis retreating from Yugoslavia near the end of the war. A group of Russian prisoners is helped by the local resistance members who feed the released captives. The Russian escape the Germans, and the Nazi commandant falls for the daughter of the local priest involved in the rebel cause. He takes some local hostages and threatens to kill them one by one until the escaped prisoners are returned. Land mines around the town make escape hazardous. He agrees to release his captives when the girl agrees to marry him. Her father walks into the sea and drowns after he officiates the wedding ceremony. As the newlyweds stand on the edge of the sea, a partisan has them lined up in the sights of his telescopic rifle.
