Synopsis by Sally Barber

The Camera: Early Photography and Moving Pictures series tracks the development of photography as an art form. Volumes one through seven examine the evolution of the tool, while volumes eight through ten focus on the technological contributions leading to modern filmmaking. This volume features two segments. "Vivat Birt Acres" revisits the Golden Age of British filmmaking and features some inventive, low-budget movies. "The Electric Paradise" examines nonfiction filmmaking, with a special look at the contributions of Charles Urban, and movie theatre construction. These documentary films convey the dynamic energy surrounding the emerging medium.
