Synopsis by Sally Barber

The Camera: Early Photography and Moving Pictures series tracks the development of photography as an art form. Volumes one through seven examine the evolution of the tool, while volumes eight through ten focus on the technological contributions leading to modern filmmaking. This volume features two segments. The first, "World on a Plate," recounts the works of traveling photographers who journeyed around the world to exotic locations to satisfy the curiosity of Victorian society. The second segment, "Caught in Time," relates the role of the photograph in recording influential people and events. These documentary films recapture the excitement surrounding the emerging medium.
