The Camera: Early Photography and Moving Pictures series tracks the development of photography as an art form. Volumes one through seven examine the evolution of the tool, while volumes eight through ten focus on the technological contributions leading to modern filmmaking. This volume features two segments. "Mirror Image" recaptures the early days of portrait photography when families enthusiastically flocked to photo studios to make use of the new medium. The film features portraits of Longfellow, Darwin, and Sarah Bernhardt. The second segment, "The Other Half," depicts how Victorian photographers profiled the lives of the poor. These documentary films recapture the wonder surrounding this emerging medium.
