Hospital nurse Barbara Deming (Gladys Brockwell) is invited for a ride in the country by outwardly respectable chief surgeon Dr. Clayton (William Scott). When the couple is stranded by a rainstorm, Clayton reveals his true lecherous nature, and when he belatedly offers to marry Barbara, she turns him down flat. By now, however, she is carrying Clayton's baby, and when she calls the doctor for financial help, she finds he has placed himself beyond her reach. When the child is born, Barbara places the kid in the care of an elderly nurse and dispiritedly goes back to work. Later on, she is hired as private nurse for handsome Neil McClintock (Charles Clary). Barbara falls in love with her patient but stops short of telling him so for fear of being "burned" by a man for a second time. Eventually, however, she gives in and marries McClintock, though she does not tell him of her previous indiscretions, nor of her infant daughter. The truth comes out when Dr. Clayton, having arrived back in town, is summoned to care for an ailing child, little realizing that the baby is his own. Outraged at the discovery of his wife's sordid past, McClintock is all for murdering Clayton but relents, telling Clayton that if wants Barbara and the baby back, he is welcome to them. The conscience-stricken Clayton then commits suicide, prompting the nonplused Neil to offer his wife his forgiveness -- and to beg hers.
