In this standard drama, a provincial young woman comes to the big city of Zurich because her husband was put in jail, and discovers that life with her sister challenges her values and her marriage. Leni () moves in with her sister, a prostitute working out of the notorious Cafe Odeon. The old cafe, like Leni, has seen better times. She decides to follow in her sister's footsteps and ply the world's oldest and saddest profession to turn a quick franc. But she is not her sister and rather than joining her, she finds that she is falling in love with a married man. Complications arise when her husband breaks out of prison and comes looking for her.
