Synopsis by Emru Townsend

Scientist/diplomat Hannah Dundee is part of a Wassoon convoy on their way to the City By the Sea -- once known as New York City -- in the hopes of forming an alliance and helping rebuild human civilization. When the convoy is torn to pieces by Hammer Terhune and his band of poachers, Hannah is forced to leave her wounded friends behind in an effort to lead the attackers away and get help from the City. At the City's outskirts she encounters Mechanic Jack Tenrec. Tenrec has just returned from a settlement that has been destroyed by a dinosaur, a kind that Tenrec has always insisted is peaceful. He insists to the enraged locals that the balance of the machinato vitae ("the machinery of life") must be maintained, but there's no denying that something must be done. Jack prepares to go against his beliefs and kill the rampaging dinosaur, unaware that it's all part of a plan staged by City governor Wilhelmina Scharnhorst, working in concert with the poachers.
