Synopsis by Hal Erickson
Fox's The Broken Law was one of many feature films inspired by the George Barrows novel Romany Rye. William Farnum stars as Esmond, a young, titled adventurer in search of his long-missing half-sister. It is believed that the girl, as an infant, was stolen by gypsies, obliging Esmond to wend his way through every gypsy camp in England. Eventually, he joins one of the tribes under an assumed name, experiencing all manner of exciting adventures. During this period, dark-eyed gypsy maiden Ursula (Dorothy Bernard) falls in love with Esmond, unaware that he is actually her own half-brother (He isn't aware of this either, though the audience certainly is!) Further clouding the issue is the fact that Esmond has himself fallen for a young lady from his own social class, but he cannot pursue this romance lest he reveal his true identity.
