It doesn't take a literary expert to recognize the made-for-cable Disney movie, Brink! as an updated adaptation of the Mary Mapes Dodge classic, Hans Brinker, or the Silver Skates (which Disney had filmed "straight" as a two-part TV drama back in the early 1960s). The focus is on Andy "Brink" Brinker (Erik Von Detten), a young, carefree California roller blader. Preferring to show off his remarkable in-line skating skills just for the fun of it, Brink is held in contempt by the local sponsored skating team, XBladz, headed by the arrogant Val (Sam Horrigan). Financial reverses within his family force Brink to accept Val's grudging offer to skate with XBladz in an upcoming cash prize competition, whereupon Brink is ostracized for "selling out" by his neighborhood pals. Highlighted by some spectacular stunt skating sequences, Brink! made its Disney Channel bow on October 15, 1998.
