Popular action star Danny Lee toplines this gritty Hong Kong crime film from director Raymond Lee, a rather unusual twist on his customary police hero roles. This time, he is cast as Lam Sau-yat, a former police officer who has become a bitter, mean-spirited alcoholic. The more traditional hero of the film is Ching Hay (Tony Leung), a detective investigating the murder of a man and a woman who were killed execution-style in front of the woman's young son (Wong Kwan-yuen. Lam is the boy's father, and is forced to clean up his act and assume responsibility for raising the boy, slowly bringing him back to his senses. Eventually, Lam gets sick of what he perceives as Ching Hay dragging his feet on the investigation and begins digging around on his own, and before too long convinces the suspicious Ching to work with him in unmasking the powerful politician who appears to be responsible for the murders. That's when, as in many such films, the pair runs afoul of the upper echelons of the police department, who are being pressured to keep a lid on the case. A disappointment financially for Cinema City, Blue Lightning is still an entertaining film, but one which proved that Danny Lee's substantial audience preferred him as a pure crusader for justice rather than a flawed antihero.
