Review by Robert Firsching

Another entertaining quickie from the prolific Roger Corman, this Depression-era crime film stars Shelley Winters as Ma Barker, whose criminal tendencies are only overshadowed by her sexual kinks. She sleeps with son Don Stroud, as well as his brother Robert Walden's bisexual lover (Bruce Dern). Robert De Niro is her drug-addicted third son, who sniffs glue. It's a lot of fun for fans of the genre, with a supporting cast including Diane Varsi, Scatman Crothers, and Clint Kimbrough as the fourth son. Winters had previously played "Ma Parker" on TV's Batman, but it was nothing like this. Corman was evidently quite fond of the concept, as he later produced the similar Boxcar Bertha, Crazy Mama, Big Bad Mama, and Big Bad Mama II.
