Review by Craig Butler

Bloodhounds of Broadway is neither a first rate musical nor a first rate Damon Runyon adaptation, but it has enough going for it to make it an enjoyable little diversion. Part of the problem lies with leading man Scott Brady, whose rather dull interpretation of the character is not helped by a lack of charisma. The story itself is also more than a little trite, but there's enough Runyon-dust spread around in terms of atmosphere and character to overcome the basic predictability factor. Best of all, Bloodhounds gives the energetic Mitzi Gaynor a chance to strut her stuff to very good advantage. Gaynor is a strange star; she's a perfectly fine actress, but not a stand-out in this area. Her singing is quite good, and her dancing is considerably better than that, but it's really her buoyant personality that stands out. That personality didn't really serve her well in films; she was a little too "normal" to become a true cinema star. But it works quite well in this role, and her musical numbers are the film's highlights, especially as staged by Robert Sidney. Between songs, Bloodhounds loses its way a bit, but when it sings and dances, it's quite diverting.
