Synopsis by Rose of Sharon Winter
This video presents a profile of one of the coolest cats ever to blow a horn: Dizzy Gillespie, whose musical career spans the age of jazz in America. Archival film footage shows Gillespie playing the trumpet in the Cab Calloway Orchestra at the famous Cotton Club in Harlem, as well as other high points in his long and illustrious career. A legend of the bebop era, Gillespie's name is often associated with his musical collaborator, Charlie Parker. A rare interview with Dizzy finds him reflecting on his life and experiences. Colleagues, including Wynton Marsalis, Benny Carter, and Lionel Hampton, talk about the lasting influence of this jazz giant.
