Synopsis by Eleanor Mannikka

One of the casualties of the division between East and West Germany was the once-thriving Berlin Stadtbahn railway line, barely surviving in 1981 with few people riding its old cars over rickety tracks. Stations echo with the footsteps of solitary passengers, tracks crumble as grasses take over, and beyond the tracks, there are glimpses of dying industrial centers. Cameras were mounted inside and outside the trains for contrasting views, affording scenes that complement the still photographs that writer and director Alfred Behrens published before this film was released.
