Synopsis by Clarke Fountain
The directors of this film, the Mitchell brothers, were well-known (and legally harassed) heads of a pornography and girlie-show empire based in San Francisco. Their goal was always to raise the showmanship standards of these genres. The 1972 film Behind the Green Door is one of only a few hardcore pornographic films ever to become a major feature item, though many filmmakers (pornographic and otherwise) tried to effect this sort of breakthrough at the time. Shot in only one day, the film begins as attractive blonde Gloria is kidnapped, a crime witnessed by two truck drivers who later that night attend a strange sex club. In the audience, the truck drivers are shocked to see Gloria on stage, led through a green door by a group of women dressed as nuns. At first, Gloria is afraid, but when the women perform sex acts upon her, she becomes aroused. Things quickly escalate until finally, Gloria, no longer passive, performs a sexual circus act with a group of lucky young men. Besides having an actual story and highly professional photography, this film features two stars from professional sports: football great Ben Davidson (fully clothed) and boxer Johnny Keyes. Another thing that sets The Green Door apart from other pornographic films is the fact that the hardcore participants do not look like something picked up from under a rock.
