Synopsis by Eleanor Mannikka

In this emotional melodrama intended to be the first installment in a history of the overthrow of colonial rule in Sri Lanka, a young married farmer and father of three faces unbearable hardships. Banda (Wijeratna Warakagoda) has lost much of his crop to creditors, and when he leaves to find work in the city, he is unjustly imprisoned. While in jail, he remembers his earlier and better days as a peasant. Meanwhile, unknown to Banda, his wife has become a kind of indentured servant and suffers physically from her work because she is pregnant. After Banda is released from prison he comes back to the village to face tragic news. For some viewers, the peasants may be a little too simpering and the officials too abusive here, yet the story itself is well within the bounds of possibility.
