At an inner-city high school, August Monroe (Khalil Everage), a socially-awkward teenager with a gift for music strikes up an unexpected friendship with the school's security guard, Romelo Reese (Anthony Anderson). Though each grapples with personal struggles, the duo bonds over their passion for hip hop music, inspiring Romelo to mentor August and cause waves in the Chicago hip hop scene.
