Synopsis by Sally Barber

While Argentina has claimed the Falkland Islands since the early 1900s, Britain occupied and administered the islands beginning in 1833 and ignored Argentine rights. The Falkland War began after Argentina invaded and took control of the islands in April 1982. The Battle for the Falklands chronicles the British defense of the islands in response to Argentina's military junta invasion. Battle footage from British television news reports documents the confrontation, in which 10,000 Argentines were captured and 655 Argentines and 236 British soldiers died before Argentina admitted defeat. The in-depth look at the Falkland War includes segments on how Britain's Margaret Thatcher responded, key events of the conflict, individual battles, and the reaction of other nations.
