Review by Robert Firsching

To many modern audiences, this melodramatic thriller may provoke its share of unintentional giggles. Joan Crawford stares, glares, and pulls her hair as a lonely spinster who marries a younger man (Cliff Robertson), only to find out that her new husband is a total loony. He lies about his past, smashes her hand with a typewriter, and cries uncontrollably until she has no choice but to have him committed. Vera Miles is Robertson's ex-wife, who is now sleeping with his father (Lorne Greene). Crawford tells them that their "filthy souls are too evil for Hell itself!," just a sample of the film's hilariously overwrought dialogue. Highlights include the shock therapy montage and the annoying theme song, which plays incessantly throughout the film and reminds Crawford of "chicken salad."
