Synopsis by Rose of Sharon Winter
The history of warfare is brought to life in this five-part series from the History Channel. Experts from the Royal Armories in London share their knowledge on the construction and use of the weapons that were used in battle from ancient times in Rome, Greece, and Northern Europe, through the development of modern warfare. This episode examines the revolutionary advance in warfare that came with the development of firearms. Originally viewed as a novelty that was often as dangerous for the shooter as for the foe, firearms eventually displaced more primitive weapons such as swords and crossbows. As their safety and accuracy improved, this weapon of choice gave the gun fighter the advantage of distance from the enemy. Archival photographs, paintings, and film clips, along with commentary by historians, tell the history of the first firearms.
