Synopsis by Rose of Sharon Winter

This volume of the six-part series covering the history of wars of the 20th century focuses attention on the development of the Cold War. The longest war of the 20th century, this battle of ideologies features the fear-based standoff between the world superpowers, the U.S.S.R., and the United States. Each country was engaged in an effort to extend its sphere of influence, with the Communist model of the Soviet State versus the American version of democracy. Using live newsreel footage to tell the story, the film shows clips of some of the momentous events of the era. These include the Communist takeover of China, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the "red scare" in America, including the McCarthy hearings and fallout shelter drills.
