Hosted by John Viehman, this video features episode seven from the first season of the award-winning PBS television series. In this second of two installments set in the Central American rainforest of Belize, Viehman's guest is archaeologist Peter Dunham of leveland State University. Dunham gives Viehman and viewers a tour of the Maya Mountains Archaeological Project, an ongoing archaeological dig underwritten in part by the National Geographic Society. Besides uncovering an ancient Mayan city, Dunham's team is exploring some of the region's thousands of caves, which the Mayans believed were entrances to the underworld home of the gods and the destination for the souls of the dead. Highlights of this program include a visit to one of the caves, where ancient Mayans performed religious rites.
