Synopsis by Cammila Collar
In this anime series based on a CLAMP manga of the same name, a girl named Misaki Suzuhara has just moved to Tokyo to live with her aunt, where she discovers the craze that is sweeping the city: a toy called Angelic Layer. In this game, kids custom design their own dolls which are then fused with impressive new technology so that they can be placed within a barrier known as a Layer and battle each other while they are controlled mentally by the participants. Misaki creates an Angel called Hikaru and begins participating in Angel Battles, along the way finding a surprising connection to her long lost mother, whom she hasn't seen since preschool. Angelic Layer explores questions about love, connection, and the role of technology in society while keeping up a lively plot. The anime series Chobits is considered to be a direct sequel to Angelic Layer, though there is no outward connection that can be inferred from watching the animes alone. According to the manga, however, the creator of the Angelic Layer, Ichiro Mihara, is also the creator of Chi.
