Synopsis by Bhob Stewart
Hu Bingliu directed this Chinese drama (in Mandarin and Hakka dialogue) about Canton contractors Fang (Wang Hong) and Dong (Sun Min) and their problems with Dong's elderly mother Xi (Pan Yu), who interferes with their hired hands. Since Fang won't let Xi move in, they saddle young newcomer Shanmei (Bai Xueyun) with the task. Shanmei wins over the old woman, mainly by accompanying her on a visit to her native village. Winner of two prizes at the 1997 Shanghai Film Festival, this film was also shown at the 1998 East West Film Festival (London) and the 1998 Cannes Film Festival.
