Synopsis by Alice Day
In this first of five documentaries on the major political and social events of the '60s through the '90s, Charles Wheeler, a British journalist, looks at the ways in which Lyndon Johnson deceived the country regarding the Vietnam War. Film of him is shown as he lies to the nation, while secretly moving to escalate the war. But this deception backfired, and his plan for the "Great Society" failed. The film covers his realization that the public was no longer on his side and his subsequent decision not to run again. Next, Nixon moved into the White House. Once in, the program asserts that Nixon began to systematically remove Johnson's social programs.
