Synopsis by Brooke Hodess
Mary Cassatt's legacy comes from her domesticity-inspired works of intimately portrayed mothers and children. Not a commissioned artist, Cassatt's subjects were members of her own family. One in a series entitled American Painters, this ten-minute video produced by Lucerne Media provides a comprehensive, introductory look at the works and influences of the Pennsylvania-born Cassatt (1844-1926) -- from her early works as a realistic portrait painter to her studies in France, where she attracted the attention of Degas, on through to her masterworks influenced by the school of impressionism. Lucerne Media has been serving the educational and public library market since 1974.
