Fay is a single mother with a daughter, whom she loves a great deal. She is living in a tiny coastal town in the state of Washington and is attempting to avoid any reunion with her ex-husband, whom she is inexplicably afraid of. When the daughter dies, Fay's love for her continues unabated, and she receives comfort from friends and even, perhaps, from beyond the grave.
